Curious about God?

I was too!

When I was growing up, I was very inquisitive and loved to ask many, many questions. I can remember a question I asked one day. I was at the backyard of my house at the time, surrounded by beautiful, tall trees, soaking in the lovely scenery.

Suddenly, the thought came into my mind: ‘Who made me?’ I was probably around 10 years of age, but that was easy enough to answer — I knew it had to do with my Mom and Dad. The next question that came into my mind was: ‘How did Mom and Dad come to be?’ That too was easy enough for me to answer – they came about through their parents.

And my grandparents came about through my great-grandparents, and my great grandparents came about through my great great grandparents, and so on. I grew up in a Christian family and I had learnt that somehow that led to Adam, the first man, and he was created by God.

Then the big, big question came into my mind: ‘Who created God?’ That was really tricky, but from what I had learnt, the answer was that nobody created God. He just came into being.

Well, that only made me more curious. I wanted to learn about God. I began to read Christian literature and the Bibles that I could find in my house.

I learnt that I had sinned against God and deserved His punishment — eternal separation from Him in hell. I was really intrigued to learn about eternity. I read that there was nothing I could do to change my eternal destination once I die — and death could come anytime.

But the good news was that God loved me and sent His Son Jesus to pay the punishment for my sin. All I had to do was acknowledge my sinful nature and turn away from it. I was to believe in Jesus and His sacrifice for my sin, and also confess that belief.

Some years later, I was at school and a student gave a message about the need to trust in Jesus. I decided to turn away from my sin and believe in Jesus that day.

But my Christian experience was not smooth. From time to time, I would see how sinful I was and felt I needed to go through the whole process of becoming a Christian again and again.

One day, I read a book that said that we can be assured of salvation if we truly believe in Jesus. We might commit sins, but that does not of itself mean we have lost our salvation. We just need to confess those sins and God will forgive us (1 John 1: 8-9). That knowledge was so liberating.

I went through the process one more time, as sincerely as I could: acknowledging my sin, confessing and repenting of my sins, believing in Jesus’ death and resurrection, and accepting Him as my Lord and Saviour. I then said the prayer at the back of my New Testament Bible for those that want to become Christians. I then wrote the date underneath that prayer, as a constant reminder. That was the life-transforming journey my curiosity led to — a journey I’m still on.

The question I would like to ask you today is ‘What are you going to do about your questions about God?’ Will you commit to finding the answers to your questions about God with an open mind? When you find the answers, will you hesitate and delay taking any action?

Remember, only today is guaranteed — you may not have the chance to change your decision tomorrow. The Bible says ‘…now is the day of salvation’ (2 Cor 6:2 KJV). Your soul lives forever. Where you’d end up after you die depends on the decisions you make while on earth.

If you’d like to receive Jesus as your Saviour, the process is simple.

A. Accept that you are a sinner. That means we all like to do things our own way, and not the way the Creator God wants us to. Since God is a just God, we deserve punishment for our sin — eternal separation from Him. Tell God about your sins. Admit them and don’t try to cover them up. Determine to turn away from them.

B. Believe that God sent His Son Jesus to die and pay the punishment for your sin, and that God raised Him up on the third day.

C. Confess and accept Jesus as your Saviour, Master and Lord.
